In reading Homesteading the Noosphere I realised what my philosophy on open source software is.

If a piece of software does everything that everyone who uses it (or would use it) wants, then it's fine for it to be closed source, however in practice I don't know of a single application that fits everyone's criteria, which is why we need end user modifiable (this means open source) software.

Fair enough?
