Ah... LANs. When I stopped gaming around the eve of 2004, I thought there'd be little use in LANning. In those days, a lan consisted of many hours gaming in a single game, some bitching, another game for some hours. Then at about 2 AM the lights are dimmed, a couple of people go to bed, and others began filesharing. Three hours later the filesharers had trawled every directory in every network share, had a queue of files in the order of about 30 GB to be transferred, and decided to get some rest. Lights and monitors went off, leaving the comforting glow of a hundred LEDs. The switch would stay up, passing bit after bit, frame after frame, trying to satisfy the requests of 6 hosts trying to make the most of their 100 Mbps links, thrashing the disk of whoever had the biggest porn & movie collection. LANs were great fun. I think for a while I might've even avoided one or two because there'd be nothing for me to do, but this weekend for some reason or another, I got some of the old crew around for one.
