Ah... LANs. When I stopped gaming around the eve of 2004, I thought there'd be little use in LANning. In those days, a lan consisted of many hours gaming in a single game, some bitching, another game for some hours. Then at about 2 AM the lights are dimmed, a couple of people go to bed, and others began filesharing. Three hours later the filesharers had trawled every directory in every network share, had a queue of files in the order of about 30 GB to be transferred, and decided to get some rest. Lights and monitors went off, leaving the comforting glow of a hundred LEDs.

The switch would stay up, passing bit after bit, frame after frame, trying to satisfy the requests of 6 hosts trying to make the most of their 100 Mbps links, thrashing the disk of whoever had the biggest porn & movie collection.

LANs were great fun. I think for a while I might've even avoided one or two because there'd be nothing for me to do, but this weekend for some reason or another, I got some of the old crew around for one.

The old lame jokes. The caffeinated products (V) and crappy food (grease). Just like old times. I don't care that I didn't do much in the way of participating, the atmosphere is conducive to getting computer-based things done. I like that. Maybe this afternoon I'll have a go at a less-complex mail server set up... or just catch up on sleep.
